Step 3: Planting the Seeds. Pompon dahlia seeds should be planted in early spring, as soon as the soil is workable. For each seed, create a small hole about 1/4 inch deep. Space the holes about 12 inches apart to allow room for the plants to grow. Place one seed in each hole and cover it with soil.
